Lawyers are adept in distinguishing truth against lies. Winning may sometimes depend on the deployment of either. Facts are presented by witnesses or stipulated by the lawyers and approved by the Court. This is why first level courts are trial courts. They try (and hear) to establish or construct the facts. Why? Because the law follows the facts. Never the other way around. The law is merely an instrument to settle disputes according to our inner idea of justice spoken silently by our conscience or the inner god in us. In reconstructing the facts, we employ our idea of truth or lies. Both are expensive but lies are much costly. Lies are as biblical as truth. The Book of Proverbs gives us the fundamental lessons on these commodities. Humans go to self destruction (or extinction) on these abstract ideas. But we digress. As a lawyer, I measure truth on carats: from zero to 24. Is it pure truth? I say it’s 24 carats. But lawyers know what half truth is or fraction thereof (sorry for being lawyerish). His pangs of conscience are alleviated where his truth is 4 carats or 11 carats. It’s truth anyway and compliant with “thou shalt not bear false bear”. A one carat truth is no lie.But a zero-carat thruth is not a lie per se. No lawyers sport a 24-carat truth. If he does, he goes thru the rungs of appeals (or earn extra time for his client which betrays whether his measure of truth is an issue). Now, we go to the Lies Department. Do lawyers employ lies like a Medical (Loose Bowel) or Death (of a relations) Certificates for continuance? These are 2-5-carat truth. A lawyer annexes an LBM medcert not because he has one but he has a difficult client. He attaches a deathcert which says that a grandparent died which is true 100% only he died a century ago. There is no measure insofar Lies are concerned. Lawyers are adept in handling the whitish-grayish truth from zero to 24. That’s how lawyers earn a living. He’s a jeweler after all. That makes him noble.
